Lyme Disease Charity Auction & Dinner

On Monday 10th October, head chef and owner of nel. restaurant Nelly Robinson is bringing in industry big guns Victor Liong (Lee Ho Fook), Troy Crisante (Bennelong), Lauren Eldridge (Pei Modern), Kirk Haworth (ex-Marque), Jason Brown (nel.), Fabian Mucke (nel.) and Pasi Petersen, (ex Café Paci) for an exclusive event to raise funds for the treatment of Lyme Disease, a hugely misunderstood illness sweeping through Australia and beyond.

Hosted by Nova FM’s Matt de Groot, the evening will raise money for the treatment of Lyme Disease victims both in Australia and abroad. The auction will include prizes such as an exclusive 2-night stay at the Emirates One&Only, Wolgan Valley to the value of $4,500; Electrolux home appliances to the value of $800; a day’s shoot with Fairfax photographer Cole Bennetts; a personal Keith Tulloch wine tasting at the vineyard with cheese; and a fully complimentary 4-night stay at a 5 star Sri Lankan hotel.

The inspiration for the event was sparked by Nelly’s best friend, Kirk Haworth, son of Nigel Haworth (co-owner and chef at the Michelin-starred Northcote Manor in the UK), who contracted the disease while in Australia. Forced to retire from cooking at 28, Kirk now faces a gruelling road ahead and without treatment will most likely develop symptoms such as blindness, partial paralysis and seizures.

“This disease attacks hundreds of thousands of people world wide every year and is just not taken seriously enough. Thousands of people just like me are visiting their local GP complaining of serious symptoms and are simply being ignored or not taken seriously. Imagine feeling as though your life is falling apart in front of you – and no-one wants to listen,” says Kirk.

All money raised from the seven-course event with matched wines will be donated to Lyme Disease Australia and to Kirk’s medical fund, which is helping Kirk with his ongoing treatment. In true Nelly Robinson style – each chef has been given the task to include lime in each dish.
